NCLEX Exam Registration Guidelines
In order to be seated for the NCLEX exam, you'll need to fill out an application to request board certification with your state. You'll also need to apply through Pearson VUE – the independent test administrators that proctor the exam – in order to take the exam. However, test administrators won't approve your request without receiving clearance from the nursing board, so it's important to send off both applications at the same time. This way, once the nursing board approves your request, you can be seated for the NCLEX as quickly as possible.
Once you start the NCLEX registration process, you'll only have a certain amount of time in which to take the exam. As you might expect, it's important to make sure that there are enough NCLEX dates available for you to choose from. Even if you can't get your first choice of testing dates, you'll need to find time in your schedule for whatever date is assigned to you. While you may be able to change this date later on, it will cost a minimum of $50.00 to do so.
Places where you can register for the NCLEX
Most nursing students will be able to register for the NCLEX exam online. Depending on the state you live in, you may also be able to file your board certification request online. Because there's so much variance from state to state, you'll need to check the Pearson VUE website for the most current information. As with any other standardized test, you'll need to follow your state's guidelines closely, to ensure that your registration proceeds smoothly.
The cost of taking the NCLEX
Even though the NCLEX exam is administered by a single agency, the exam cost may vary based on a number of factors. For example, the RN exam is typically more expensive than the LPN version. You may also have to pay more based on specialty. And of course, there are a number of additional fees that you'll have to pay if you need to change the exam or location date for any reason.
Identifying information
When you go to the exam center, you'll need to be able to prove your identity in order to be seated. Typically, your driver's license or state ID card is essential. You may also need to bring along a second form of photo ID. If you aren't certain if a particular type of ID is sufficient, you may want to call the test administration center and ask. Without question, it's best to find this out ahead of time, instead of arriving for the exam only to find that you can't take it.
While you're filling out the NCLEX application form, it's important to also apply for your license through the state nursing board. Even though this process may seem complicated, your academic counselors can help you with any questions you have about the process. In many cases, your instructors will also have important information related to deadlines and other procedural aspects of signing up for the NCLEX exam, so be sure to check with them before beginning the registration process.
