SAT Classes: Different Ways to Prepare for the SAT

Even though there are dozens of SAT books and study guides available, you may want to try out some of the additional resources that are available today to prepare for the SAT.  For example, you can take SAT prep classes or even hire a tutor to assist in your SAT prep efforts.  You may also want to look online to find forums dedicated to helping young people prepare for the SAT exam.  As with any educational pursuit, you’ll get much more out of your study time if you have someone to help you structure it in an efficient and productive way.

The Advantages of Taking SAT Prep Courses

If you take an SAT prep course, you’ll benefit from learning from someone that’s experienced with these exams.  Among other things, your teacher will help you pinpoint weak areas in your test taking strategy; as well provide specific methods and strategies to overcome them.  This person can also help you learn the specific materials that are covered on the exams.  Typically – if you choose to pursue this route – you’ll attend SAT classes at least once per week.  If you’re really lucky, you may be able to find a class that’s offered at your high school!

How to Find SAT Tutors

Depending on your skills as a student, you may find that individualized attention is the best way to prepare for the SAT exam.  For a fee, you can hire a college student to act as your SAT tutor – just get proof that they did well on the exam themselves.  You can also ask your guidance counselor for a list of recommended tutors.  Typically, they’ll be able to give you references based on the successes of students that have worked with these tutors before.

For the most part, if you’re working with a private tutor, SAT tutoring will occur in your home.  Depending on your situation, you can also ask to have an SAT tutor meet you at the school or in a local library.  Your tutor will likely have a set price and the two of you will decide together on the number of times you need to meet in order to sufficiently prepare for the exam.

Online Resources

If you live in a neighborhood where traditional SAT courses aren’t offered, you can still try to take a SAT online prep course.  While you won’t have the benefit of a live teacher in the room, you’ll still be able to ask questions and receive answers via email.  You may also find it useful to join forums dedicated to SAT preparation.  On these sites, you’ll be able to find other students who are grappling with the same material and learn about test-taking strategies that they’re developing.

Purchasing an SAT prep study guide will give you a great deal of information about the exam and how to take it.  However, this may not be enough to help you adequately prepare for the SAT exam.  Without a teacher or tutor to help, you may misinterpret or completely miss important information from the study guide.  Therefore, it may be to your advantage to take SAT prep classes or hire a private tutor.  If you can’t take advantage of these opportunities in your neighborhood, it might be worthwhile for you to find a few SAT prep resources online.
